The Hidden Napa Gem of the Year

The Sodaro Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is possibly the greatest collectible-Cabernet deal from the incredible 2018 vintage. Grown on a gorgeous 21-acre estate tucked in the Coombsville sub-AVA, it earned 96+ points from Wine Advocate, placing it alongside $300+ wines like Realm and Schrader!

If you haven’t heard of Sodaro, you aren’t alone—although the family-owned estate in Coombsville certainly hasn’t escaped the critics’ notice. Jeb Dunnuck and Parker’s Wine Advocate have been dropping impressive scores on the small winery for a decade and even longer.

The name on the label might not be well known, but the names behind it should be. The winemaker is Leo Tellez, a third-generation Napan with fine wine in his veins: His grandfather worked for Charles Krug, while his father was with Mondavi for 25 years. Leo jumped into the wine trade at the top, interning for Kapcsandy Family Vineyards, where he worked closely with winemaker, David Sotelo, who served as an important mentor.

In 2012, Leo joined celebrated winemaking consultant Denis Malbec as his assistant winemaker, working with small family-owned wineries including Kapcsandy, Blankiet, and Sodaro. In 2016, Leo joined Sodaro full-time as their winemaker, working with the top-notch fruit brought up by viticulture consultant Michael Wolf.

This is the most impressive wine from Tellez’s short time at the Sodaro helm. A small-production Cabernet grown on the well-draining, ash-heavy Coombsville soils, it aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. Now, after several years in the cellar, it’s drinking beautifully, and it stands with some of the top bottlings in Napa Valley.
