Honest Wine Has Never Tasted So Good

The 2021 Joyce Vineyards Grenache Syrah Mourvedre, from Arroyo Seco in Monterey County, struck us as a $50 bottle—an honest wine boasting the complex structure of a single-vineyard Santa Barbara Rhône blend, and bursting with pure fruit expression, energy, and vibrancy. For a self-made winemaker only in his 30s, it’s an incredible feat.

Winemaker Russell Joyce credits just two people for teaching him to make wine: his dad—a former professional racecar driver turned dentist and hobbyist winemaker—and Dan Karlsen, a family friend and wine industry veteran who helped steer the ship at Domaine Carneros, Dehlinger, Chalone, and Talbott. From both, he learned to love Monterey Bay.

“I grew up on our estate, and I worked every weekend, so when I was young I looked at winemaking as just work,” Joyce admits. “But I came around, and at 19, I started to see wine as a sexy thing.” When his dad offered to let him take over their 1,000-case winery, the younger Joyce began charting a course to make the purest expressions of wine from Monterey County he could.

This is an unmanipulated GSM with low-sulfites from organic and sustainably farmed vines in two single vineyards: The Ventana and Zabala vineyards in Arroyo Seco. Deep ruby in color and only 13.8% ABV, it brings a basket of just-picked fruit to the forefront, with aromas of peppered black plum, dark strawberry, black cherry, and dried red flowers. The backdrop offers sweet notes of incense, licorice, black olive, resinous herbs, and dried blueberries. This wine is all too easy to enjoy—you’ll want to share it, but you’ll also feel the urge to drink it all yourself.
