Vineyards and Prices that Predate Paso’s Modern Stardom

Estate-grown, sustainably farmed, and crafted by the man Robert Parker calls a “top-flight winemaker,” Le Vigne’s Nikiara Estate Red is a rarity for a region that “can’t stop winning,” according to Vinous. It’s the flagship bottle of a family-owned winery that can trace its roots back to the 1960s, which is why its pricing predates the interest and related inflation of Napa carpetbaggers and venture capital.

“Paso is on the rise, and it is going to be harder and harder to find this quality at this price,” explained VP of Wine, Advanced Sommelier Laura Koffer. The Cab-dominant blend is pulled from the very best blocks of Le Vigne’s two estate vineyards. It's bold, powerful, and sun-kissed—in other words, a top-end Paso red from a legendary vintage.

Consulting winemaker Terry Culton is a local legend in Paso. Heralded by Robert Parker as a “top-flight winemaker,” he contributed to the ascendance of standout estates like Peachy Canyon, Adelaida Cellars, Calera, Willamette Valley Vineyards. He even crafted wines for NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens’ Paso Robles label.

This bottle is mostly selected from Le Vigne’s sustainably farmed Domenico Vineyard, which contains the first vines planted by the Filippini family. Those were put in the ground in 1982, two decades after purchasing the land from country music legend Buck Owens. Seated in the Estrella sub-AVA of Paso Robles, its loamy soils are rich with nutrients from the Salinas River basin, and the Pacific breeze helps moderate the summer’s hot days, maintaining the wine’s balance.

We hesitate to think what this wine would cost if it came from Napa—which is to say, what wines like this will cost over the coming few years.
