One of THE Young Winemakers to Watch

You CANNOT normally drink the work of Erica Stancliff at a discount.

An in-demand consultant who’s done a stint at Rudd and worked for Paul Hobbs, she’s been highlighted in Forbes, the Robb Report, and Wine Enthusiast. She also holds the title of enologist under Michael Browne (of Kosta Browne) at CIRQ.

That would be an exemplary career by anyone’s standards, but Stancliff took her first full-time job in wine barely a decade ago, making her one of the most talked-about names in Sonoma’s tight-knit wine community. She’s a true star on a rocket-like trajectory.

So the chance to pour her rich, silky 2019 Overt Chardonnay—a layered, luscious bottle sourced from some of the finest vineyards in Oregon, and protected by NDAs to match—was quite the coup, especially because the wine comes from the greatest vintage ever in the state.

It’s not often that top California winemakers get the chance to work with incredible grapes from the Willamette Valley. Thankfully, Stancliff has a friend—a star of stars on the West Coast, who we can’t name here—whose Willamette Valley connections afford him access every year to several highly coveted sites in the state. In 2019, he had a little extra fruit available, and offered her a one-off shot at making this wine.

She took the costly step of aging the Overt Chardonnay for a full 22 months in barrel, imparting extra richness and smoothing out the texture. When we poured this luxurious wine at our tasting panel, the praise was unanimous: It was clear from the first sip that this is the kind of Chardonnay that our members go wild for.
