    The Sommelier Pile-On Is Inevitable!

It all came down to timing.

Our Master of Wine, Vanessa Conlin, just happened to be in New York City. The very same day, her importer friend—a trusted purveyor to many MICHELIN-starred eateries in New York—had just returned from Europe with a special sample bottle of Champagne.

The moment Vanessa tasted it, she knew it was her first and only chance to grab this wine. If she hesitated, some of New York's hottest restaurants would snatch up the allocation within days.

This exquisite Blanc de Noirs is one of our biggest Champagne discoveries this year. Hailing from the Champagne sweet spot of Celles-sur-Ource—home base of icon Cédric Bouchard, whose wines sell for hundreds of dollars, if you can find them.

Éric Maître’s Brut Tradition is 100% Pinot Noir from the Côte des Bar, Champagne’s rare crossroads of high quality and low pricing. Grown on 40-year-old vines, the wine soars from the glass with notes of apples, pears, brioche, and chalk, and delivers laser-like precision on the palate. Thanks to Vanessa’s quick action, you can tell your friends you nabbed this jewel before the sommelier set even had a chance to list it!

Maître works in Celles-sur-Ource, where Pinot Noir is king. The Maître brand dates from 1869, but he took the reins in the late 1980s and launched his own brand in 1995. Today, he is assisted in this modest 20-acre enterprise by his wife Daniella and their two sons, and their meticulous farming and winemaking is evident in the clean, pure, focused style of the wine.
