2001 Gianni Voerzio Barolo la Serra

Good deep ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, blackberry, violet, bitter chocolate and smoky oak. Rich, bright and fine-grained, with powerful dark fruit flavors currently inundated by deep chocolatey, nutty oak. Finishes with substantial oak tannins, a medicinal suggestion of cough syrup and strong torrefaction flavors of coffee and bitter chocolate. Did I mention this is oaky?

2000 Gianni Voerzio Barolo la Serra

($130) Deep red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of musky dark fruits, violet and spices; currently showing less chocolatey oak than the 2001. Juicy, floral and tight for the vintage, with vibrant, bright flavors of black fruits and mint. Sharply delineated for a 2000 if rather closed. The juicy finish features a slight youthful dry edge.
