With a true sangiovese expert such as Giuseppe Mazzocolin of Felsina at the helm, it's no surprise that these are some of the very best wines made in the Colli Senesi. And you'll appreciate the ridiculously low prices for wines of this quality.
Also recommended: 2005 Chianti Colli Senesi (86).

2004 Castello di Farnetella Chianti Colli Senesi

Medium ruby. Smoky roast plum aroma complicated by wet earth and moss. Offers a rich, ripe mouth feel, with an intriguing iodiney, smoky, earthy quality to the ripe, soft plum and cherry fruit. Good minerally finish. Much more interesting than the somewhat dilute '05.

2004 Castello di Farnetella Poggio Granoni Toscana Rosso

(a blend of 70% sangiovese, 10% syrah, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot) Dark ruby. Pretty aromas of ripe plum and cassis exude a delicately smoky, balsamic quality. Light and silky on the palate, the ripe, balsamic blackberry and plum fruit lingering impressively on the very smooth finish.
