2004 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

($31) Black-ruby color. Funky but not unpleasant aromas of sweet fresh sausage, bay leaf, fennel seed and blackcurrant. Much fruitier in the mouth, with pretty redcurrant and cassis fruit complicated by notes of forest floor and flint. Finishes quite smooth, with f ine, silky tannins.

2003 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone

($55) Deep ruby. Lovely ripe red and black fruit aromas complicated by black pepper, vanilla, smoke and raspberry liqueur. Smoky, fat and supple, but with bright acidity lifting the peppery black and red fruit flavors. Finishes with an intriguing and very persistent minerality and lovely silky tannins. Always one of the best examples of Nobile.
