2006 Bodegas Arrocal Ribera del Duero

($17) Opaque ruby. Potent mulberry and blueberry aromas expand seductively, picking up baking spice and floral qualities. Suave, silky and impressively pure, with vibrant dark berry flavors saved from the brink of jamminess by bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. Impressively juicy and persistent, with excellent palate saturation and clarity.

2005 Bodegas Arrocal Ribera del Duero Seleccion

($38) Opaque ruby. An expansive bouquet of red and dark berry aromas is highlighted by fresh floral and mineral qualities, with an undercurrent of licorice and mocha adding seriousness. Blackberry and cassis flavors are enlivened by youthful acidity that carries through the finish. Nervy, primal dark berry skin flavors should gain more sweetness and breadth from cellar time.

2004 Bodegas Arrocal Ribera del Duero Seleccion

($31) Bright violet. Vibrant, perfumed scents of expansive blackberry, cassis, rose and graphite. Focused, pure dark berry flavors are brightened by brisk mineral and floral pastille qualities. The wine's fine-grained tannins do not detract from its sweet, vivid fruit. Great verve here. (Grapes of Spain, Lorton, VA)
