2005 Vinedos y Bodegas Dominio de Tares Baltos Bierzo

($16) Bright purple. Spicy blackberry and plum on the nose, with intriguing tobacco, espresso and licorice accents. Bitter cherry and dark plum flavors are braced by firm tannins and vibrant acidity, with slow-mounting sweetness carrying through the finish. Impressively energetic and pure, closing with fresh, vivid blackberry and plum.

2004 Vinedos y Bodegas Dominio de Tares Pago 3 Bierzo

($88) Inky violet. Explosively perfumed, highly complex bouquet suggests raspberry, cherry, candied plum, vanilla, clove and rose. Showing a lot of oak today but there's impressive depth to the red and dark berry liqueur flavors. Firms up on the finish, which features sweet blackberry and kirsch underscored by exotic oak spice. I'd love to have seen this raised the same way as the Baltos. (Classical Wines From Spain, Seattle, WA)
