1998 and 1997 Rhone Valley Wines: Nineteen ninety-eight is a very good
vintage for the Northern Rhone and a knockout in the South-the best year
since 1990. The finest examples from Chateauneuf du Pape and Gigondas are
must purchases for fans of Southern Rhone wines.
David Schildknecht on Germany 1998: 1998 produced a host of improbably ripe, juicy rieslings that should age well.
New Releases from Italy: My report on the best new releases from Italy encompasses more than 200 wines meriting 87 points or more, including
late-arriving Barberas from the glorious 1997 vintage; a number of excellent
1998 Barberas and Dolcettos; and a host of splendid 1997 Chiantis.
