Our most extensive coverage to date of the best new releases from California’s North Coast (more than 100,000 words of wine criticism) includes in-the-bottle notes on cabernets from the splendid 2007 vintage and an in-depth look at the “fire-and-ice” growing season of 2008, a vintage that nonetheless is turning out to be a pleasant surprise. Although sales of expensive California wines have hit the wall, we were taken aback by the relative pricing restraint shown by many talented Sonoma-based winemakers working with purchased fruit from some of the North Coast’s finest sites.
