The vineyards of the Fattoria Corzano e Paterno lie on the steep and stony slopes surrounding the fortified farmhouse "Corzano" in San Casciano Val di Pesa. Roughly 17 km south of Florence, the property runs along the ancient Via Cassia and the River "Pesa" which separates it from the "Classico" region of Chianti.
Corzano sits like a natural stone outcrop, a serrated edge along the hilltop horizon. The building was constructed centuries ago from fieldstones as a watchtower overlooking the valley leading from Florence to Siena. It grows up out of medieval foundations, possibly even Etruscan, as nearby tombs testify to their presence in the area.
In 1969 the property changed hands for the first time in 700 years. Six hectares of the farm's one hundred and forty were planted with vines in the very best positions around Corzano. At the altitude of 300 meters they form a natural amphitheatre facing south-southwest in soil gravely in structure and rich in clay and lime.
While the first wines were bottled in 1972, the winery really came into prominence in the 1990s under the supervision of Aljoscha Goldschmidt. Most people don't realize that in the late 1960s and 1970s, there was little revenue to be derived from grapes in Chianti. The wine market was depressed and most farms needed second and third crops to supplement any profit derived from grape growing. Goldschmidt realized early on that the best wines of Chianti would be made with newly developed, less productive clones. As wine was of little value, the old clones were developed for large production rather than for concentration. Beginning in the late 1980s Goldschmidt began investing the family's resources into the replanting and redevelopment of the vineyards.
By the mid-1990s, the investment was paying dividends. Sangiovese, Tuscan grapes, was finally flourishing and the international market discovered Corzano e Paterno.
2001 was an extraordinary vintage in Tuscany, one of fine concentration, but great balance and structure. In this vintage Goldschmidt made 800 cases of this complex, authoritative Sangiovese that shows elegant aromatics and powerful structure. Three years in bottle have only served to draw out and magnify the beauty of this brilliant Riserva bottling. Drink now-2010.
