Tom Beckmen and his son Steve have created a name for themselves through producing classic Rhone varietals on their beautiful Purisima Mountain Vineyard in California's Central Coast. They decided soon after acquiring this parcel of wind-swept, hillside land in 1996 to ignore market trends and take advantage of the unique features of their property. The Beckmens were convinced that the exposure, slope, and limestone subsoil of the 365 acre plot were perfectly suited for growing Rhone grapes.
While the Beckmens have planted a myriad of white and red Rhone varieties, Syrah is the dominant planting here, enjoying steep hillside exposition. Now farmed biodynamically, Steve Beckmen's Syrahs are incredibly deep in color, with huge concentration and intensity. This concentration is welcome but unsurprising, considering the impediments to growth of vines caused by the limestone.
This is a big, rich concentrated Syrah from Beckmen's Purisima Mountain vineyards. Deep ruby/purple color with intense crushed berry aromas and flavors. A hint of black pepper speaks to the cooler climate and the steep vineyard facing.
Serve the 2006 Syrah on the cool side (about 60 degrees) and pair it either with grilled salmon this summer or with roasted lamb and rosemary this fall.
