JUST TIME FOR TWO

It's November! Yikes! I can't believe it's here. But then - I seem to be obsessed with time. There's just not enough of it. I sometimes think there's some force in the universe stealing time - at least my time. Anyway, that said, I somehow lost time, and only have time to talk about two wines that are definitely worth your time.

And here they are.

BONNEAU DU MARTRAY

Corton-Charlemagne stands apart from the cluster of grand crus to the south. Its position as "king of the hill" (the hill of Corton) is undisputed. That's not to say the red grand crus of Corton aren't superb, but that the "king" is truly magnificent. It exhibits the power often associated with the finest reds, but its nuanced flavors are expressed in white.

When it comes to kings, the Corton-Charlemagne of Bonneau du Martray reigns as one of the greats. We attribute this to exceptional terroir, conscientious vineyard management, talented winemaking - and possibly, the Domaine's singular focus of producing only grand crus. Such luxury of purpose has its rewards and demands. The rewards are deliciously ours. The demands are clearly the domaines - demands they meet and often exceed with unwavering class.

The 2007 Corton-Charlemagne, Bonneau du Martray once again exceeds expectations - it's a winner! Rich, minerally and powerful, mingling fresh white peaches, the crisp bite of green apples, accents of white flowers and a stream of racy minerality - with intricacy, depth and length - and - the striking purity of minimal new oak. But - as enticing as that might be, you can't drink it now. Well, you can - no one's stopping you - just don't. Despite all the good stuff that's there, the best stuff is yet to come. Corton-Charlemagne isn't a wine for early drinking. It won't offer its full complexity in the first few years. Corton-Charlemagne is a wine that demands cellaring - and if you comply with that demand, you'll be vastly rewarded. And if you can't - well, honestly - don't waste your money. You'll want to give this 6 - 8 years, and if you have very good storage, you could probably go longer.

To some, Bonneau du Martray is synonymous with Corton-Charlemagne, and vice versa. So buy now and find out why - in about 6 or so years.

DOMAINE LA MILLIERE

Everyone's a Chateauneuf-du-Pape lover in 2007, and why not - there's a lot to love. The vintage is exciting, the wines are delicious and for the thrill - they're often well priced. Not always, but often.

That said, we didn't choose the 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape of Domaine la Milliere just for the vintage, or just for the price - we picked it for the same reason we do every year - we love it! It's a charmer, it's a pleaser, it's a keeper.

The Arnaud family, with five generations of wine growing experience behind them, purchased this estate in 1940 - re-planting its orchards with vineyards. Michel Arnaud, who now runs the domaine, grew up in those vineyards and has made them his home. His intimate knowledge of the land and the vines has enabled him to produce wines that express a sense of place in harmony with his personal sense of style. It's a style that marries the traditional and modern - that entices with its youthful fruit and perfume, then evolves with complexity over time. It's a style that offers early pleasure, as well as greater pleasure over time. So, no matter when you choose to drink them - you'll love them too.

The 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine la Milliere is fragrant with raspberries, herbs and wild flowers - those appetizing scents that whet the palate. Sip is what you'll want to do - you can't resist. And yes - its flavors are as enticing as its aromatics - a melange of blackberries, cherries and raspberries laced with flowers, licorice, sweet spice and savory herbs. Rich, stylish, concentrated and long. Lovely! For now or later - but we would suggest cellaring it for at least 5 - 8 years.
