Carl Roy East Side Cuvée We hatched the idea for REDUX soon after we discovered the Carl Roy Cabernet Sauvignon "East Side Cuvée" at the top of the wine list chez Jean-Georges on Columbus Circle. Just six weeks after we published our first story, the ratings flooded in, making Chef V's favored Cabernet Sauvignon one of the highest scoring under-$40 Napa Cabernets in WineAccess history.

So, we did what we'd never done before. We sent a second email alerting non-buyers to the reviews of the buyers — and went out a second time.

Today, four months after the 2012 "East Side Cuvée" earned 4.11 stars out of 5 — and a handful of jaw-dropping reviews — it's time for another dose of REDUX.

The 2012 Carl Roy "East Side Cuvée" is a beauty. Purple/black to the rim with lavish aromas of blackberry and mountain blueberry preserves, laced with new-wood cedar. Massively concentrated on the attack, like all the top 2012s, plush and velour-like in texture, the core features a dense mix of crushed-black-fruit compote, violets, and Left Bank graphite, all bracketed by the sleek tannins so common to Cabernets grown just south of the Stags Leap line. Drink now-2022.

As to the buyer reviews, here's a little taste of what sent the WineAccess scoreboard into 5-star orbit.

*****Simply Amazing

Not sure if it is just the year but what a year. The is wine is amazing. The taste is exceptional, smooth and delightful. This wine makes a simple dinner amazing. The energy of the wine is comfortable leaving the body and mind feeling very Zen and relaxed. I am so glad I purchased this bottle and year. I do not consider myself a specialist in wine. I do know what taste good to me and how it makes me feel after. This feeling is shared among my family.

*****Blown Away

Easy 5 stars here. Opened one last night, and did not decant. Initially a little stiff, and you could taste the alcohol level, but then it opened after some glass swirling...one of the most balanced wines I've ever tasted...a little fruit on the attack, but nothing overwhelming. The wife was picking up all manners of fruit, including apple (she's great at this). I was way more impressed with the restrained and delicious mid palate feel here. That's when the wine gets you...a little hint of vanilla and toasted oak, with some good French-style minerality. Finish was perfect. This drank like a $200 bottle+...so for under $30/bottle, this easily gets 5-stars. Wish I would have bought more. Wow.

****Nice Addition
by Mark from San Antonio, TX on 05/21/2014
Against my better judgment, I opened a bottle of this wine on the first day of shipping. I gave it roughly 2 hours to breathe and it opened up quite nicely. I let it cool to about 60 degrees before drinking. It's a very dark purple / black shade and looks nice in the glass. Strong blackberry nose, and great mouth feel with a nice finish. For the price, it's teetering on being a solid 4.5. Good value, I enjoyed it.
