I have been buying every good right bank 2010 I can get my hands on since I first read the Parker report. Roque Le Mayne is rich, structured to age and the best of the lot under 25 dollars.

Unfamiliar label, bought because of vintage and looking for affordable Bordeaux. For a Cotes de Castillon, five stars.

Understated
The writeup got us to buy, but if anything, it was understated. Laying the last four bottles down.
-- Gwen from Sandpoint, ID

Pleasant young Bordeaux
Very berry to the nose and rich and dark in the glass. A deep chewy fruit that rolls pleasantly into light smooth tannins. Complex in the fruit, it should improve some yet and the tannins linger.

Wine Spectator's 96-99pt Right Bank Bargain

It had been two decades since Bordeaux saw back-to-back vintages of similar quality. But from a critical perspective, 1989 and 1990 wouldn't hold a candle to 2009 and 2010. By the time Robert Parker and Wine Spectator finished, they'd dropped a whopping 18 perfect 100pt scores on the top wines from two of the most decorated harvests since 1961.

Initially, it would be the almost-New-World bombast of 2009 that brought the critics to their knees. Prices skyrocketed, with First Growth bottles often traveling around the world before coming to rest in Beijing. But with the release of the 2010s, particularly on Bordeaux's Right Bank hotspots -- Pomerol, St. Emilion, Fronsac and Cotes de Castillon -- '09 would be left in the dust.

For the first time in WineAccess history, we even considered taking a run at some of the top 2010 St. Emilions. Then we came to our senses. There's something about 4-digit price tags that still make us squeamish. So we went back to what we do best -- sniffing out the Right Bank diamonds in the rough.

In Bordeaux, it's often said that June defines the size of the crop. August defines structure. But it's the last weeks of the growing season -- in September, or in this case, way into October -- in which the true quality of a vintage is determined. Never have these adages played out more accurately than at the superstar Cotes de Castillon estate of Roque Le Mayne.

Spring flowering was problematic, trimming yields by more than twenty-five percent before things even got started. But that early season "misfortune" would pay dividends come October. The problematic set made for clusters filled with berries of uneven size, what the Bordelais call "the chicken and the hens." After a mild summer, a turquoise sky Indian summer pushed clusters to perfect maturity. On nearly every cluster at Roque Le Mayne, bunches were littered with those sweet, seedless berries, filling in the broad, muscular shoulders of the vintage with the sweetest of black fruit cores.

Opaque purple in color -- unusually so for an appellation where refinement usually trumps power -- the nose is explosive, filled with ripe cassis, sweet herbs, and dark plum. The attack is surprisingly massive, showing off superb briary, chewy, crème-de-cassis concentration, all buttressed by marvelous Right Bank backbone.

Tasting Notes

2010 Chateau Roque Le Mayne Cotes de Castillon
"Opaque purple in color -- unusually so for an appellation where refinement usually trumps power -- the nose is explosive, filled with ripe cassis, sweet herbs, and dark plum. The attack is surprisingly massive, showing off superb briary, chewy crème-de-cassis concentration, all buttressed by marvelous, Right Bank backbone. Delicious out of the gate, all that purple/black fruit opulence stealing center stage. But don't be afraid to lay this one down for a quiet slumber. Drink now-2017."
