Vines of Chateau Turcaud Top-Rated Bargain White in WineAccess History

Buyers voted it the top white-wine bargain of 2011 and 2012. Since we first pried loose a couple hundred cases of Maurice Robert's exquisite Sauvignon/Semillon blend three years ago, Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers has lit up the WineAccess scoreboard like no bargain white wine in website history.

We first discovered Robert's white-wine genius over 30 years ago while dining at Gérard Vié's Les Trois Marches in Versailles. That night, the recently named "Best Young Sommelier in France" wowed us with an electrifyingly mineral 1981, an exquisite white that sliced a buttery sole meunière like a stiletto.

A week later, while dining at M. Vrinat's Restaurant Taillevent in Paris, another 3-star sommelier paired the still crisper and more mineral 1980 Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers with warm goat cheese and toasted walnuts in a marriage for the ages. Thirty-four years later, the wine many Parisian sommeliers believe to be France's greatest bargain white continues to drop jaws just as it did in the summer of 1982.

For those who pay close attention to Bordeaux vintage reports, you know all about the challenges posed by the 2013 growing season. An impossibly wet spring led to a tiny, irregular set. June was nippy, to be followed by a glorious July and August. While the châteaux of the Medoc were obliged to wait through a wet and problematic September to harvest late-maturing Cabernet Sauvignon, both the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc at Château Turcaud were picked under fine conditions in the first week of the month. Sugars were solid, while acids were stinging, reminding Maurice Robert of his superb 1984 — an age-worthy blend that was still going strong when we tasted it nearly 20 years after bottling!

Maurice Robert's brilliant 2013 Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers is pale greenish/gold to the rim, infused with minerally aromas of quince and pear, touched with high-toned anise. Tightly wound on the attack, working its way to a tight core of ripe apple and pear, the cool-vintage finish braces all the natural richness with riveting acid backbone.
