While most people immediately think of Germany when Riesling is mentioned, this noble varietal has found different and outstanding ways to express itself in appellations the world over. Fine Australian Rieslings are characterized by rich minerality and subtle citrus notes to go along with a whopping dose of petrol on the nose. While this is a stark contrast to the sweet, albeit well balanced, style of the Germans, it is beginning to carve out a niche as an excellent aperetif as well as an ideal match for spicy Asian and Indian dishes. The best Australian Rieslings come from both the Clare Valley and the Barossa Valley, and within Barossa the high-altitude vineyards of the Eden Valley are an ideal climate for the varietal.
Thorn-Clarke's Terra Barossa Riesling is a single-vineyard bottling that was rated a highly-respectable 88 Points by Steven Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, with the following tasting note:
"Light yellow. Mineral-laced lime and grapefruit aromas, with subtle sea salt and white flowers adding complexity. Clean, brisk and focused, offering citrus and melon flavors and gentle mineral bite. More open than most examples from this vintage; I'd serve this with rich Asian seafood dishes."
Now for the best news, we've dropped the price from its usual $15 to only $7.99!
