Domaine Crochet SQL Queries, Segmentation and Top Flight Sancerre for $16.50

These offers are now difficult to rationalize. From an ROI perspective, they don't make sense. Over the last 24 months, WineAccess has exploded. When evaluating offers for sub-$20 bottles, we no longer speak in terms of numbers of bottles or cases -- but of pallets. Anything short of 3 pallets, or 168 cases, seems to annoy more members than it pleases.

But every so often, a winegrower reaches out to us with a no-brainer. Not only do we know the wine to be superb, but those who purchased on the first go around have responded in kind. Due to a family tragedy and a cashflow crisis, the first WineAccess offer price was well under market -- in this case forty percent beneath the going rate of top-flight Sancerre. But there's one big problem. When Janine Crochet emailed, offering us a last shot at her son's brilliant 2011 Sancerre, before she shipped it off to Sweden, we were all ears. At least until she told us that only 624 bottles remained.

We asked Janine to give us a few days to figure this one out. Even on our slowest day, 52 cases of a blue chip Sancerre, wouldn't last 2 hours if the offer was sent to the entire membership. So we did what we're obliged to do more and more frequently these days. We ran SQL queries against the member database, trying to figure out who was most likely to be interested in the most stunning Sauvignon Blanc bargain of the last year, a beautiful Sancerre, drawn entirely from the steep, calcareous hillsides of Bue-en-Sancerre -- offered for a pittance.

So yesterday, we started off by going to previous Crochet buyers and our biggest Sancerre drinkers. Today, we're trickling out the last few cases to the rest of the list.

The 2011 Janine et Dominique Crochet Sancerre is pale golden in color. Exquisite aromatically, featuring a riveting mix of ripe apple and pear, lightly tinged with anise. The attack is rich and juicy, infused with luscious apple/pear minerality. The finish is beautifully vibrant and pure, showing off the brilliant persistence that has Sancerre aficionados always on the lookout for the top wines of Bue.
