***** 2009 Vintage
My husband and I adore Sancerre, especially after our trip to the Loire last year. This is easily one of our favorites. Refreshing and mineral. Soft lemon and citrus flavors.
-- Jay from New York, NY

***** 2010 Vintage
The best of the Loire! Keep it coming!
-- Janie from Chicago, IL

***** 2010 Vintage
I am glad that I bought a case. I will be enjoying this for the next year.
-- Russell from Charlottesville, VA

***** 2011 Vintage
Truly representative of Sancerre at it's best. Clean, well bodied and just the right amount of sweetness. Very, very enjoyable.
-- Martin from Nakina, NC

Pencil Sharpeners in Bué-en-Sancerre

The 2012 vintage in the Loire Valley was a story of the haves and have-nots. All along the Loire, from bud break to mid-July, the weather was miserable. A flash April frost rocked portions of Sancerre, trimming potential yields by 15-20 percent. The early summer was cold and wet, and the vines were well behind come mid-July. In the tiny hamlet of Bué-en-Sancerre — which along with Chavignol and Verdigny is home to the richest, most electrifyingly mineral Sauvignon Blanc of the region — the vines were already two weeks behind. Many chose to play it safe, not dropping fruit so as to fend off mildew and jumpstart maturity. These overly cautious vignerons would pay a hefty price, harvesting plump clusters that would make for dilute Sancerre.

But the most rigorous growers of Bué — like Dominique Roger, the Pinards and Crochets — acted like gunslingers, dropping fruit aggressively, providing necessary air flow while jumpstarting maturity. When the call to harvest came in the last week of September — weeks before the rain began to fall in October — all would reap handsome dividends, turning out brilliant Sancerres that would combine the mineral intensity of 2010 with the honeyed plumpness in 2012.

Since 2011, we've offered three vintages of Teddy Crochet's brilliant estate-grown Sancerre. Crochet has lit up the WineAccess scoreboard like no Loire Valley producer in website history, garnering 179 perfect 5-star ratings and an average score of 3.94. But neither the winemaker's 2009, 2010 or 2011 holds a candle to this wonderfully rich and crisp 2012.

Pale-golden to the rim with gorgeous aromas of ripe apple and pear, tinged with quince and honeysuckle, lightly touched with top-pedigree anise. Rich and juicy on the attack, infused with lusciously juicy plumpness, all braced by the fine acid backbone so typical of the calcareous hillsides of Bué. Drink now for its primary-fruit fleshiness, or lay down for 4-6 years when the bitter honey core takes center stage.

Commercially speaking, the release of the 2012 vintage provided many challenges. Even as the European economy is teetering, the U.S. dollar remains incomprehensibly weak. The top growers in Sancerre export 70-80 percent of their wines. Given the tiny harvest of 2012, most raised prices. Importers were stuck but never blinked, grabbing every drop they could get. Like their neighbors, the Crochets inched up prices, hoping to offset the impact of the spring frost and the short harvest.

In pricing today's offer, we took a careful look at the forces lined up against us and did the only thing one can do under the circumstances: We reached for the pencil sharpeners!
