3.88 out of 5 stars and Pouilly Fuisse Exquisite 2013 White Burgundy Beneath La Roche de Solutré

These days, with the demand for Burgundy far exceeding even the most copious vintage's supply, bargain-hunting for fine mineral Chardonnay from the Côte de Beaune to Mâcon is largely an effort in futility. On July 3rd, just as we've done each summer since 1985, we headed to the steep, rocky hillsides above the hamlets of Pouilly, Fuissé, Vergisson and Solutré. We knocked on a half dozen of the most critically acclaimed cellar doors. As always, the reception was welcoming, followed by hours-long tastings, each concluding with a half-dozen vintage Chardonnays that would take us as far back as the late 1980s. But in the end, given the tiny yields of the 2013 harvest and spiking demand worldwide for these exquisitely pure, mineral white Burgundies, we still came up empty on five out of six visits.

Only Jean-Pierre Sève, whose bargain Mâcon-Solutré has garnered more 4- and 5-star ratings from WineAccess members than any other under-$18 white Burgundy in WineAccess history, came through in the clutch.

The winter of 2013 was cold and damp, but after some unusually warm days in March, the vines seemed poised for a fast start. "We thought we were in good shape until early April," Jean-Pierre told us as we sipped this brilliant pale-golden Chardonnay from Riedel stemware. "But then the spring turned really cold and very wet. The set was small and uneven. By the time July rolled around, we were two full weeks behind."

If you ever wanted to know why there seems to be so much premature hair loss in the winegrowing villages of Burgundy, you only had to step into the vigneron's shoes in the summer of 2013. From the beginning of July to the end of August, while there were no significant heat spikes, there was barely a drop of rain. "A bit of rain in September really helped out in fending off dehydration. From that point on, we just sat back and waited, hoping the weather would hold out. Most of us up here picked just before the October rain. Conditions were perfect. Clusters were small with quite a few shot berries. Acids were excellent."

Drawn from a 3-acre parcel that sits just a few yards from the Pouilly-Fuissé line, one more time Jean-Pierre Sève turned out one of white Burgundy's most irresistible bargains. The 2013 Mâcon-Solutré is brilliant pale-golden to the rim, infused with mouthwatering aromas of ripe apple and pear, tinged with botrytised honeysuckle. Displaying the kind of richness that so impressed WineAccess buyers of Sève's 2009, this time the late-harvest apple/pear concentration is braced by stinging acidity, arguing eloquently for as much as a 10-year rest in a cool cellar.
