Monitor Ledge Vineyard Duckhorn's Monitor Ledge

Set just above St. Helena, a stone's throw from Duckhorn's famous Three Palms Vineyard, the Monitor Ledge Vineyard takes its name from an outcropping in the mountains overlooking its 43 acres. Long the most prized Cabernet component of Duckhorn Cabernets, the winery put out its pure Monitor Ledge Cabernet Sauvignon in 1998. Just over a decade later, in the cool, small-yield 2009 vintage, Dan Duckhorn's brainchild released what many believe to be the finest red in winery history.

Set on the alluvial fan of Selby Creek, Monitor Ledge Vineyard's soils are a mix of cobblestone, gravel, and sandy loam. Because water drains quickly in the poor soils, the vines struggle to eke out 3 tons per acre, making for small clusters strewn with BB-sized berries of great intensity and structure. Always one of the first vineyards harvested by Duckhorn, Monitor Ledge's early maturity was handsomely rewarded in the fall of 2009. While many in the valley were obliged to wait through the deluge of October 12-13th, Duckhorn's finest Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested under turquoise skies beginning on September 28th — well before the storm rolled in.

Jet-black to the rim with beautifully chiseled aromas of crushed black fruits, graphite, tobacco and violets, laced with new-wood cedar. Big, powerful, yet — as always with Duckhorn — sleekly muscled, packed with tremendous black-fruit density, braced by the fine, dusty tannins of Monitor Ledge.

"Combines ripe, rich layers of dark berry fruit with a pleasing measure of finesse and grace, weaving a tapestry of spice, cedar, anise and currant details. Firms nicely on the finish. Drink now through 2024."
