Vineyards of Ettore Germano 92+ Points and Barolo's La Tache

The first time we saw Serralunga, given it's storied history, we couldn't believe how sleepy the hamlet was. There are a couple of cafes, and a small, nondescript shop where you can pick up bread and prosciutto. If you're running out of gas, best of luck. You're stuck.

Everyone in Serralunga grows Nebbiolo on these south-facing slopes where the soil is stained white with precious calcaire. The holdings are small, the names on the mailboxes drawn out of an Italian wine collector's scrapbook. But when you sit in one of the cafes and shoot the breeze with the locals, the conversation invariably returns to a single parcel, arguably the top vineyard site on Italy's greatest wine route. The vineyard is called "Cerretta" -- Piemonte's best answer to La Tache.

Who owns a slice of Cerretta? There's Ca' Rome' and now, Davide Rosso. It took Bruno Giacosa decades to come up with 2 hectares, purportedly paying a price that would make Burgundians nervous. But many now believe that Cerretta's finest wine is made by Serralunga's most reserved winegrower. His name is Sergio Germano, and in 2008, this ingenious enologist turned out the Barolo of his career.

In difficult vintages, Sergio Germano is the first to concede that the old vines of "Cerretta" struggle to reach complete phenolic maturity. "The limestone challenges the old vines. When the growing season is uncooperative, we spend the summer in the vines, nursing each plant to maturity. But in great vintages, 'Cerretta' shines. For us, 2008 could well be our brightest star."

The 2008 Germano Barolo "Cerretta" is one of those wines that's far easier to consume than to describe. The color is brilliant ruby, the aromas are of sweet black cherry, infused with wild herbs. Terrifically wound up, sturdy and built for the long haul, we'd spend ten minutes just swirling and smelling, allowing this powerhouse Nebbiolo to put on weight and unfold. Only then did the sweet red fruit explode, offering a phenomenal floral potpourri, at once wild-berry sweet and tightly wound.

Tasting Notes

2008 Ettore Germano Barolo Cerretta
"The 2008 Barolo Cerretta impresses for its focus and energy. Sweet dark red cherries, flowers, mint and sweet herbs inform the somewhat stern yet expressive mid-palate. This is a focused, wiry Barolo loaded with energy and tension. The focused style is appealing, but the wine is going to need at least a few years in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023."
92+ points -- Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
