There is very little that hasn't been said already about the 2005 vintage for Burgundy. What a vintage! Much like Bordeaux, it was great in each and every commune. But the most successful area was the Cote de Nuits. The 2005 vintage for the Cote de Nuits earned 98 points from the Wine Spectator.
Unfortunately, a great vintage in Burgundy does not come cheap. Many of the wines sell for $100 or more. A value play in 2005 is Marsannay. It's just a few miles north of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Cote de Nuits, and produces similar wines that are dark, rich and fruity, with ample structure and mineral character. We were able to find one of the best while we were in Burgundy in the Spring. Domaine Huguenot Marsannay les Echezots.
With a 91 point rating from the Wine Spectator, it was one of the top wines from the vintage under $40! Out of the 143 wines that were tasted in that range, only ten wines received 91 points or better. And only two received a higher score than the Domaine Huguenot.
Wine Spectator 91 points and already drinking very well!

Wine Spectator 91 points
Graphite and cherry aromas signal this suave red, whose beam of pure cherry continues through the lingering finish. There's complexity, concentration and fine length. Best from 2010 through 2020.
