2004 Brunello di Montalcino Offering

GarysWine.com Wine Deals E-Blast

Notes from the 2004 Brunellos we tasted last week:

The 2004 vintage, in my opinion, is one of the finest vintages of Brunello I have seen in a very long time. The quality of the fruit, from near perfect growing conditions, was exceptional and produced wines of both power and grace. For the most part, the wines showcased excellent structure balanced by high-toned fruit and acidity. This is truly a vintage that will reward its owner’s pleasurable consumption for more than a decade. Brian Maxwell, Italian Wine Buyer

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Vintage Chart updated in January pegged the 2004 vintage in Tuscany at 96 points which is a higher mark than 2001 and 1997! The Wine Spectator rated the vintage at 92-97 points.

This is our first of a few 2004 Brunello Offerings. The ratings have not come out on the 2004's yet. So, we have put Brian Maxwell's ratings under each wine. Ratings (out of 4 stars). And we've also included the scores from the 2001 vintage, the most comparable one to 2004.

This is a pre-arrival offering and the wines are all due to arrive in the late Spring.

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 93 points
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals superior clarity and delineation in its black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and new leather in a style that artfully balances a very ripe expression of fruit with firm structure. This vibrant Brunello offers terrific length and compelling inner perfume that never trails off. The tannins build on the finish, so a few additional years of bottle age seem prudent. This is a superb effort from proprietor Elia Palazzesi and may very well be his finest wine yet. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. The estate’s 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Brunello is never inexpensive, but this is the real deal, and in relative terms, it is one of the world’s great values in fine, cellar worthy wine.
2004 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino
Red Wine; Sangiovese; Tuscany;

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 97 points
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a huge, dense wine that explodes from the glass with tar, smoke, earthiness black cherries and minerals. The wine possesses dazzling concentration and tons of richness, as waves of fruit coat the palate in stunning style. This big, dramatic Brunello needs time in bottle, but it is nothing short of magnificent today. The balance, and the integration of the French oak in particular, is brilliant. For those who are curious to try a bottle now, the wine should be opened a few hours in advance as the tannins are imposing at this stage. This is a rare Brunello of superb pedigree and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.

The estate’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso possesses striking depth as endless layers of sweet, perfumed fruit emerge with tons of grace. This, too, is an intense, full-bodied wine. The balance here is utterly exceptional, and the wine’s sheer plumpness makes for a highly rewarding glass of Brunello. Succulent dark cherries, spices, underbrush, minerals and new leather come to life as the wine sits in the glass, yet this remains a backward, structured Brunello in need of serious bottle age. The Pianrosso is a terrific effort from proprietor Paolo Bianchini. Ciacci’s Pianrosso is an old-vines selection that spent 36 months in Slavonian oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
