The Wine Advocate's Napa Valley "Sleeper"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate was the first to tout the brilliant structure and extraordinary longevity of the top 2010s. In December 2012, the Advocate published an exhaustive vintage report, describing the longest and coldest growing season in Napa history.

Budbreak came late. Early summer felt more like spring. With the growth cycle already weeks behind, some growers panicked and de-leafed, only to be punished by two heat spikes that blistered exposed clusters. But the valley's most experienced viticulturists stood pat, waiting through a chilly end of August, betting the farm on a blue-sky Indian summer. When nature delivered just that, Wine Advocate reported, the most prudent growers harvested pristine small-berry clusters, making for Cabernets that are "utterly brilliant, with deep colors, precise fruit, ripe tannins and expressive aromatics." The Advocate then instructed its readers to "do whatever they can to source the best 2010s, as they are magnificent."

Napa's "First Growths" — Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Schrader, and Colgin — would garner 97-100 points. The "Super Seconds" — Chappellet, Pritchard Hill, David Arthur, Bond St. Eden, and Hundred Acre — would finish just a few points behind at 93-96 points. Fueled by the Parker press, Napa's superstars not only raised prices, but trimmed back wholesaler allocations, fattening up balance sheets by selling as much as possible directly to their mailing list collectors. Today, every blue-chip cellar is bare — with this one exception.

It was a far more youthful Craig MacLean who first spotted the impossibly steep slope at the base of Spring Mountain in 1994. At the time, MacLean was the head winemaker at Spring Mountain Vineyards and had come to know the mountain like the back of his hand. But the soil composition on the hillside that he found so intriguing spoke far less of the mountain than it did of the rockiest parcels of St. Helena and Oakville. With one salient difference: The grade of the slope he was eyeing was 30 degrees!

MacLean soon made it a point to walk the hillside at least once per week, marveling at the ruggedness of the slope, imagining a Cabernet with To Kalon-like richness, firmly braced by mountain backbone. Craig knew full well that the spot was too risky for planting. Still, the brilliant Cabernet-maker thought, what's wrong with dreaming?

Two years later, Perry Butler and his wife Carolyn bought the property. A few months later, a vineyard crew arrived with spades and shovels, jabbing sticks in the ground, carving Cabernet Sauvignon plants into the backbreaking hillside.

When they were done, and Juslyn Vineyard was planted, Perry Butler called Craig MacLean.

Since 2004, six out of seven Juslyn Cabernet Sauvignons have earned 93-95 points from Parker's Wine Advocate. But with the release of the staggering 2010, Juslyn's "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon reached new heights, garnering a rave review and 94-96 points — outpointing "Super Seconds" like David Arthur ($150), Chappellet Pritchard Hill ($150), and Bond St. Eden ($425).

"The 2010 Red Blend Perry's Blend is richer, darker and more intense than the 2009 tasted alongside it, some of which may simply be the result of its relative youth. Firm tannins support a core of deeply expressive, vibrant fruit in a wine that reflects all of the qualities of this vintage. The 2010 Perry's is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot."

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot) reveals great fruit, but it is more structured, tannic and reserved than the 2009, no doubt because it is a year younger. It reveals lots of graphite, forest floor, black currants, blueberries and the tell-tale smell of violets that comes from the Spring Mountain AVA. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20+ years."
