*****2011 Effet Papillon Blanc
Fantastic Wine! The clarity of flavor is stunning. Great summertime wine with complexity.
-- John from Santa Clara, CA

***** 2011 Effet Papillon Blanc
This wine is incredible for the price. Drinks much more like $30 village wine from the Rhone. Very, Very pleased with this purchase. Should have gotten more.
-- Jason from Provo, UT

***** 2011 Effet Papillon Blanc
This is a beautifully made crisp white wine. Dry as a bone, with peach and melon notes and plenty of minerality. An outstanding value!
-- Jim from West Chester, PA

***** 2011 Effet Papillon Blanc
Pale yellow in color. A bit floral, with some pear and other ripe fruit in the nose. Nice smooth mouthfeel, with flavors similar to those in the nose. Finishes with nice acidity to balance everything out.
-- Bob from Palmyra, PA

***** 2012 Effet Papillon Blanc
Should have bought more ... Great summer wine.
-- Marcia from Birmingham, MI

Effet Papillon and the Michelin Stars

When Stephane and Marjorie Gallet began their search for vineyard property, they studied France's wine routes from north to south. Burgundy was far too expensive, as was the Northern Rhone. The Loire was tempting, but the most interesting appellation -- Sancerre -- was wildly overpriced. The Haut-Medoc seemed affordable, but only because two out of three Chateaux was on the brink of bankruptcy!

One summer day, Stephane and Marjorie headed south on the autoroute A6. They blew past Valence and Orange, then branched west towards Montpelier. Just a few hundred kilometers from Barcelona, they weaved through the hills north of Perpignan, finally arriving in the sleepy, whitewashed village of Montner.

By noon, the temperature was flirting with 100 degrees, the wind howling at 90mph. Driving their 4x4 up a dirt path, they pulled over next to a three-acre ancient vine parcel. Each plant was head-trained as they are in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, spidering close to the ground so as to protect themselves from the Mistral. The soils were fine and gravelly, strewn with flaky slate. The roots, they'd soon learn, burrowed five meters underground, quenching the vines' summer thirst on underground water reserves. The couple was intrigued. Six months later, they purchased a house and cellar in Montner and set up shop.

Over the course of the next decade, the Gallets stunned Parisian sommeliers with their startlingly rich, minerally whites and reds. Marjorie took the Champs-Élysées by storm, landing wine list placements left and right, most notably at Michelin 3-star Guy Savoy and Le Pres Catalan. It wouldn't be long before over fifty Parisian hot-spots followed Guy Savoy's lead.

From the superb 2012 harvest in the Roussillon, Stephane crafted what many believe to be the greatest bargain white in France. Drawn from dozens of small hillside parcels -- a patchwork quilt of schist and sand -- Gallet fashioned this rich, minerally exotic mix of Grenache Blanc and Macabeu.

Glistening pale green in color, with vibrant aromas of white peach and melon, the stunning 2012 "Effet Papillon" is surprisingly weighty and complex. Richly mineral and juicy, faintly kissed with sweetness, this exotic white is beautifully braced by "northern" vibrancy and persistence. Drinking beautifully now, but don't be afraid to lay this beauty down for a year or two. A little bit of rest will work wonders.

Tasting Notes

2012 Le Roc des Anges Effet Papillon Cotes du Roussillon Blanc
"(A blend of Grenache Blanc and Macabeu with a small smattering of other indigenous varieties). Glistening pale green to the edge with plush mineral aromas of white peach, orchard pit and melon. Richly mineral and juicy, faintly kissed with sweetness, this exotic white is beautifully braced by blue chip pedigree vibrancy and persistence. Drinking beautifully now, but don't be afraid to lay this beauty down for a year or two. A little bit of rest will work wonders."
