Lisini Vineyards, Montalcino 94pt Lisini Brunello. Sorry in Advance.

After our 2006 debacle, we've adopted a different tactic for the overheated 2007 Brunello di Montalcino market. Rather than push for healthy allocations, enough to satisfy the entire membership, we're locking into whatever we can from the top estates, even when the numbers are as small as they are today.

The 2007 harvest was an anomaly in Tuscany. The summer was hot, almost as warm as 2003, though the vines were less starved for water. So while the top 2007s are massive wines, with deep, dark, juicy concentration, carrying New World flavors, unusual silken texture and suppleness, there is none of the dried fruit character that we considered a flaw of so many 2003s.

Lisini, of course, with its small production, tiny yields, and old vines (particularly important in these hot vintages), has always fared well in the warm years. The 2003 rendition was one of the stars of the harvest, earning a spot in Wine Spectator's Top 100. With this lavish 2007, Elina Lisini's Brunello is poised for a second cameo.

The Wine Advocate came on like gangbusters at 94 points, describing this deep, dark ruby, aromatically exuberant effort as "especially voluminous … endowed with tons of richness and nuance," while still suggesting that despite the heat of the vintage, this monumental '07 will be going strong in 2027. Based on our experience with these Lisini Brunelli over the last couple of decades, The Wine Advocate seems to be right on the money.

Tasting Notes

2007 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino
"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is very beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice take shape as the wine opens up in the glass. This is an especially voluminous wine endowed with tons of richness and nuance. A finessed, seamless finish laced with sweet hints of tobacco and wild flowers rounds things out in style. This is a terrific showing. Lisini gave the Brunello three years in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027."
