Domaine de la Citadelle
The Côtes du Luberon is the "youngest" of the appellations in the Southern Rhône. Domaine de la Citadelle is located about 25 miles east of Avignon, the medieval home of the French Popes. Domaine de la Citadelle was established as a winery in 1989 with the purchase of 8 hectares of vines. Over the years, the plantings have increased to just about 100 acres under vine. There are currently 14 different varieties of grapes planted within 65 different parcels that make up the domaine's holdings. The types of grapes planted in each parcel is dependent on exposure, topography and chemical makeup of the soils. Soil types include clay-limestone, clay sandstone, and stony marl. Yields average 40-45 hl/ha. Pruning is fairly severe, and the prunings themselves are burnt immediately to prevent incubation of vine disease. Early bud removal in the spring, and a vendage verte in July further limit yields. Harvesting (by hand), begins in late August, and continues through October depending on variety. Winemaker/proprietor, Alexis Rousset-Rouard is shown here in the vineyards. |
