 We were introduced to Weingut Münzberg in Godramstein near Landau by Paolo De Marchi of Isole e Olena in Chianti. Paolo loves German wine but his connection with Münzberg is more direct: Günter Kessler worked for a year at Isole e Olena, learning viticulture from Paolo and Italian along the way (his English is Italian accented). Günter works in the vineyards, growing healthy, ripe Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc), Riesling, and Pinot Noir. The modern winery is still under the nominal direction of their father Lothar Kessler, but the style of the wines is clearly marked with the signature of Günther and his brother Rainer (shown here). The best wines are the Weisser Burgunders, including both the Kabinett and Auslese trocken wines, which are apple scented, lean, and elegant. |
