Domaine Georges Vernay
 Georges Vernay is largely credited with reviving the nearly invisible appellation of Condrieu during his time as mayor of the sleepy village. Some of the most striking vineyards in France have been farmed here for over a millennia. The local grape, Viognier was a curiousity to the outside world and nearly disappeared by the early 1970s. George took on the responsibility of encouraging and inspiring the local growers through his work in the famous old vineyards, Terrasses de l'Empire, Les Chaillées de l'Enfer and the Coteau de Vernon. In 1996 his daughter Christine Vernay (shown in photo at right with her father) left her position teaching Italian at a Paris university and with her husband Paul, took over the day-today operation of the winery. She had to learn everything from scratch, but she inherited a long tradition and body of knowledge from her father, and has placed her stamp on the domaine. |
