2002 Emrich Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Auslese
|
Merchant Reviews In 1834 the German viticulturist Johan Philipp Bronner published his book, "Viniculture in the Provinces of Rheinhessen, the Nahe Valley and the Mosel Valley." About the town of Monzigen he wrote: "The meagre conditions on the Monzinger hill seem, in themselves, to be the cause of the good reputation of the wines, which are, as a result, so high in price and among the best in the Nahe region." Werner Schönleber believes the Halenberg vineyard to be the finer of his two Großes Gewächs (grands crus). The blue Devon slate gives leaner, more crystaline wines than the sandier Frühlingsplätzchen, where the wines are marked by the smell of ripe white peaches. This auslese shows tremendous concentration with firm acidity, and will develop for years in a good, cool cellar. -- Greg Moore, Moore Brothers Wine Company, April 1, 2006
