2009 Ettore Germano Alta Langa
|
Merchant Reviews In 1990, Sergio Germano returned from oenology school to his family's six hectares in Serralunga d'Alba. As a fourth-generation wine grower - in a part of Barolo where most farmers sold their grapes to Fontanafredda, the largest négociant in the region - Sergio moved their entire production to estate vinification and bottling within two years.
Sergio has used Piedmont's open appellation, Langhe, to produce wines that expand his own family's traditions. The Alta Langa, a "champagne method" sparkling wine from Cilie in northern Dogliani, is a superb example. Mostly Pinot Noir from schisty soil overlooking the Tanaro, it is aged on the lees for 18 months and develops the stony and bready aromatics of good Bouzy. Excellent as a classic apéritif. -- Brian Healy, Moore Brothers Wine Company, January 15, 2013
