 Andreas Von Canal (see photo) and his wife, Irmy have vines in the top sites in Winningen: the Brückstück, Rüttgen, and especially the Uhlen, where a seam of red clay running through the black slate vineyard soils adds notable spiciness to the wines. The vineyards are the steepest in Germany, planted on terraces that were cut into the slopes by the Romans. The Terrassen Mosel, as the district is known, benefits from the warmest microclimate on the Mosel, which results in easily ripened grapes. Weingut Freiherr von Heddesdorff is the top producer, and in addition to supplying Moore Brothers with excellent, creamy textured, mostly dry Rieslings, Andreas and Irmy have housed, fed, and generally encouraged us with information leading to some of our favorite producers in other regions. |
