(a blend of 54% cabernet franc, 40% merlot and 6% malbec, with a crop level, according to Decelle, of 34 hectoliters per hectare; 60% new oak) Bright ruby. C abernet franc-dominated nose offers precise aromas of red cherry, blackcurrant, violet and white pepper, plus a hint of cocoa. Then densely packed and a bit tight in the middle, featuring lively if not particularly pliant red and black fruit flavors and a nice dusting of minerals. Finishes long and slightly austere, with mounting dusty-but-ripe tannins and a lingering strawberry note. This rather uncompromising wine possesses sneaky concentration but is not the type that shows well during the primeur tastings; still, it should develop well during its second year of elevage and in bottle.
