The unusually mild 2010 growing season in Piedmont gave birth to what many producers are saying is the most remarkable vintage for Barolo and Barbaresco in decades. Angelo Gaja, Elio Altare, Gianluca Grasso, Bruno Rocca, La Spinetta, and Cà del Baio hit the jackpot, crafting intoxicatingly complex Nebbiolos that combine floral, red-fruit sweetness, Burgundian elegance, and age-worthy structure.

Given the small size of the harvest and the international demand fueled by the Wine Advocate vintage report, most of the top-rated wines were allocated before release. On the secondary market, prices continue to climb. Angelo Gaja's Sori Tildin and Sori San Lorenzo now fetch up to $500/bottle on the auction market. La Spinetta Vigna Gallina is topping out at $160. Bruno Rocca's Rabajà isn't far behind.

At all but one stop, even our oldest winemaker friends cautioned us before we took seats at the tasting table, apologizing both for the price hikes and the lack of inventory. There would be just one counterexample: Silvano and Giovanni Pasquero-Elia's storied Sori' Paitin.

In 2010, Giovanni explained, Sori' Paitin was treated to one of the most miraculous growing seasons in decades. In hot summers, this steep, southwest-facing slope is often scorched by the sun, requiring multiple passes on the terraces, tailoring leaf canopies to protect clusters from blistering. But in what would prove to to be the coolest and most extended growing season in memory, and after a chilly, wet spring, the set was small — just a few small-berry bunches per plant. The summer months were mild, absent any of the heat spikes or hail damage that marred previous campaigns.

"It was truly a year where the wine made itself on the vines. September was beautiful," Giovanni said. "Silvano, Dante, and I just sat back and waited for sugars to climb and the seeds to brown. Harvest took place in October under perfect conditions."

In a bold move that took much of Piedmont by surprise, shortly before the harvest, the brothers brought in an old friend, consulting enologist Dante Scaglione — formerly of Bruno Giacosa — to help oversee the vinification. Scaglione wasted no time making his winemaking mark on Sori' Paitin.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Piedmont expert Antonio Galloni sang Scaglione's praises, describing the 2010 Barbaresco Sori' Paitin as a graceful mix of "power and elegance," before lobbing on a 93-95 point crescendo — joining Gaja ($170/bottle), La Spinetta ($125), and Bruno Rocca ($100/bottle) as the 2010 Barbarescos of the Year.

Bright ruby to the rim, infused with mouthwatering aromas of red fruits, tobacco, sweet spice, and thyme. Rich and piercing on the attack, packed with small, crushed red fruits, Burgundian in shape and form, still braced with textbook Piemontese backbone. The Wine Advocate suggests laying this one down until sometime in the late 2020s! They'll get no argument from us.

Sweet red cherries, flowers and cinnamon emerge over time, but the 2010 stands out most for its exceptional pedigree and pure class. Striking in every way, the 2010 is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030."
