WINES ARRIVE IN EARLY NOVEMBER

Fattoria Felsina is the most important producer in the Chianti commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the sandy, gravelly outpost grafted on to Chianti Classico's southeastern-most corner. The 100% Sangiovese wines here are totally unique from those made from the browner, yellow clay-laden 'galestro' soils of the heart of the region; darker in color, more perfume-y and sleeker on the palate. Proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin makes the most of his raw material, turning them into some of Tuscany's most sought-after wines and, while many others get a lot more for a lot less, he's maintained a totally realistic, refreshing approach to marketing and prices. For as long as I've been at PRIMA, they've been our best-selling Tuscans.

2006 Felsina Chianti Classico 'Cru Rancia'

Rancia is from a single vineyard site in front of the winery with parcels planted in 1958 and 1982 solely to Sangiovese. Its great exposure and relative altitude make it unique and, as such, has always been bottled as a separate cuvee. It's uncommonly dark with a pronounced purple flower aspect to its black-, nearly blueberry fruit and crisp, broad tannins. Rancia can age and age, perhaps even longer than its bigger brother Fontalloro.

Robert Parker: The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a vibrant, focused wine that flows with the essence of dark fruit, minerals and flowers. The wine possesses gorgeous length and proportion, all of which is framed by powerful yet well-integrated tannins. Simply put, this is a superb Chianti that also happens to be one of the best relative values in fine, age worthy wine. The Rancia is made from vines planted on poor soils at 420 meters above sea level. In 2006, the Rancia spent 16 months in French oak, of which 60% was new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. 95 points

2006 Felsina Fontalloro

Mazzocolin made Fontalloro originally as his entrant into the Super Tuscan sweepstakes and, even though this 100% Sangiovese aged in small oak could technically now be called Chianti Classico, it stands out as Felsina's flagship wine. Softer, lusher and more forward than the stonier, more taciturn Rancia, Fontalloro is a rock star that really shows the class Sangiovese can achieve when handled as meticulously as possible. Thoroughly delicious even when young.

Robert Parker: The 2006 Fontalloro is much more sweet and open than the firmer Rancia. Enticing, expressive aromatics lead to an expansive core of fruit. Round, finessed tannins give the wine an additional level of polish. Today the Fontalloro is fleshier and more ready than the Rancia. There is superb purity to the fruit and wonderful overall balance. Tar, smoke, licorice, and grilled herbs come to life on the finish. Fontalloro is made from vineyards in both the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Simply put, this is a great, majestic Fontalloro. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018. 94 points
