That Mendocino's Anderson Valley is now considered one of America's most important spots for Pinot Noir is now a given, making Duckhorn Winery's investment in the region over a decade ago a very wise one, indeed. In short order, thanks to the Duckhorn trademark attention to detail, both in the vineyard and the cellar and their always savvy marketing, they have become one of the Valley's major players and their Goldeneye Pinot Noir one of America's benchmark Pinot Noirs.
The Goldeneye Pinot Noir is a very distinctive wine; while not not as elegant and lacy as some Pinot Noirs from the Anderson Valley, it is known for its intense, often minerally cherry fruit and its great aromatics and texture. It always stands out in a tasting for its tongue coating, almost maple syrup-like texture and incredible cherry perfume.
Even though it's the kind of Pinot Noir that can handle a wide variety of cuisines with aplomb, I usually drink it with herby, smoky lamb chops or other grilled fare with lots of flavors. I have also poured Goldeneye at Thanksgiving dinner for its ability to balance the many sweet and savory flavors on the table at once.
As production of Goldeneye has increased, the made the decision to lower the price of their fabulous Pinot Noir in order to make sure it continues to be your Pinot Noir of choice and we've decided to throw in some free shipping in the hopes that you'll add some of this Mendocino beauty to your cellar.
Wine Spectator: Firm and rich, this is marked by tight mineral, dried currant and berry fruit that gains velocity and depth, with touches of cedar and anise and tannins that give the flavors traction. Needs time. Best from 2014 through 2017. 90 points
