Robert Keenan Winery, Napa Valley 93-pt Spring Mt. Cabernet Sauvignon: Shrugging Off Inflationary Temptation

One more time, Parker got it right. The Wine Advocate's early report on the Napa Valley's Cabernet class of 2009 compared the top wines of the vintage favorably with the monumental 2007s. Sugars were naturally high. On par with 2007. Texture was dense and plush. But unlike 2007, the structure of these new releases was softer and more refined, subtle, dusty tannins cloaked in black-fruit velour.

Particularly, on the nosebleed slopes of Howell and Spring mountains, riper, browner seeds made for a handful of indescribably rich, silken 2009 Cabernets.

But with the good news came the bad. This would be the second consecutive short crop harvest, and with the economy just beginning to show signs of recovery, many of the valley's most prestigious names took full advantage, raising prices to replenish depleted balance sheets.

One could expect a 2009 mountain Cabernet Sauvignon rated 93 points or more to be priced much higher than $60/bottle. But Michael Keenan shrugged off inflationary temptation, offering his staggering 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon for a tame $57/bottle — even AFTER Robert Parker published his 93-point rave review.

The key to the 2009 growing season, particularly in the later maturing mountain appellations, was in bringing the small cluster Cabernet to full ripeness before the rain began to fall on October 12. Seventeen hundred feet up Spring Mountain Road, Keenan and his vineyard crew took full advantage of the mild summer temperatures, opening up canopies, exposing bunches to the sun. While others on Spring Mountain missed the window of opportunity, Keenan's first call to harvest came on September 28, making for one of the most voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignons ever drawn off this historic property.

The Wine Advocate called Keenan's 2009 "a great wine … rich and voluptuous, it totally saturates the palate from start to finish" — before tacking on 93 points.

Tasting Notes

2009 Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
"Keenan's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the highlights in this portfolio. Rich and voluptuous, it totally saturates the palate from start to finish. Dark fruit, violets, spices and licorice all flesh out in this large-scaled, dramatic Cabernet Sauvignon. Everything simply works. The 2009 is a great wine. Even better, it is extremely fairly priced considering the quality of what is in the bottle. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. I imagine another few years of bottle age will only help the 2009 develop even more complexity. In this vintage the Cabernet Sauvignon is 73% from Spring Mountain and 27% from Pope Valley. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."
