Teira Vineyards Old-Vine Zin Takes Postrio and Gary Danko By Storm

They're the wine list placements everyone wants but few secure — particularly on their very first trip to the plate. Dan Donahoe is persistent. Some say he's even brash. So when he began reaching out to San Francisco's hottest restaurants to show off his Teira Zinfandel, he took to the phones like a Wall Street trader. But when, to his surprise, he landed an appointment with Christie Dufault at Gary Danko, Donahoe felt weak in the knees.

"I guess you could say I was excited when I booked the first appointment with Christie," Donahoe laughed as he poured the dark, brambly 2011 Teira Zinfandel Sonoma County. "But the closer I got to the date, the more I had a case of the jitters. I've always said, 'Play to win — or go home.' So, I swung for the fences: Gary Danko. What if Christie sent me packing?"

When the day came, Donahoe arrived early. Dufault, one of the most respected sommeliers on the coast, was charming — yet all business. Dan poured a glass of the Teira Zinfandel and the sommelier held it up to the light, examining the brilliant ruby color. She swirled and smelled — crushed red-fruit preserves, rose petals and sweet spice. Then she sipped. Ten minutes later, she all but knocked Dan Donahoe off his bar stool, as the sommelier ordered a pile of Teira Zinfandel to feature by-the-glass at Gary Danko. Donahoe was off to the races.

With the wind at his back, Dan took San Francisco by storm, landing placements from Mickey Clevenger at Fleur de Lys and Rob Perkins and John Lancaster at Boulevard. A16, Absinthe, Bix, Postrio and Rubicon would soon follow.

Drawn from the old Clos du Bois vineyard, first planted in 1974, the just-released 2011 Teira Zinfandel is a beauty. Brilliant ruby to the edge, infused with mouth-watering aromas of black raspberry, violets and herbes de Provence. Not at all ponderous or syrupy on the attack like so many Zins these days, but richly elegant, marrying stunning red fruit opulence with chewy cool vintage restraint, there's just one problem with this luscious 2011: It goes down too easily.
