River Road Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
Merchant Reviews
Russian River Valley, Sonoma, CA- Owner Gary Mills believes his Pinot Noir reflects the benefits of a cooler climate by exhibiting loads of elegance, with sweet cherry and plum flavors. Perfectly balanced refined fruit and soft tannins create a seductive, silky smooth wine. {Intense, Cherry, Plum, Medium-bodied}

5.0 of 5 Stars Jammy all the way
By Cage11921143, January 15, 2006
Absolutely a fruit bomb! This wine embodies the concept of a "fruit-forward" wine. Smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, it offers a tremendous amount of red fruit, with virtually no tannins.

Great wine. I will definitely be buying more. Better than a lot of more expensive wine. Great price.

The 2006 was excellent - silky, smooth, good fruit, and well-balanced.

4.0 of 5 Stars Good value

There is a RRV signiture taste profile and this has it. Great, big, fruit forward flavor with enough balancing acidity. Not a blockbuster, but well worth it, and good with food.
4.0 of 5 Stars Well Worth the Money!!
By Wilson11975801, May 15, 2006
I tried the 2004 vintage and found it well worth the $15. Very good fruit, low tannins, not to much alcohol, lots of berries and florals. I recommend.

well balanced, great tasting wine for the price
4.0 of 5 Stars Best in class ...
By Thong11786672, September 18, 2005
My novice, plain-language account of River Road Pinot Noir ... I tried low, mid, and high-priced Pinot Noirs and found this one, above all others, stood way out. After chilling and then letting the wine air out in the glass for about ten minutes I felt it had loads of fruit flavor up front, a hint of spice going down, and a pleasent ripe fruit aftertaste that lasted just about right. Very smooth and with lower tannins, but not weak-bodied or wimpy. For my tastes, I'd say it was just about right on all counts from aroma to flavor to body. River Road Pinot Noir is easily the equal of anything I tried at twice the price.
4.0 of 5 Stars Excellent Pinot Noir for your money
By Archer10420730, August 02, 2005
Great value for such an exceptional wine. Very smooth; slightly sweet. UPDATE: Price has gone up since I originally rated this wine a 5 star value. Still very good, but no longer an incredible bargain.
4.0 of 5 Stars Worth the 14 bucks

Nice tannins, very well balanced, wonderful fruit, delicate like good pinot should be.
4.0 of 5 Stars Summer Comfort
By Mart, May 17, 2002
This is a Pinot Noir with a difference. It has a bold, bracing taste and a long finish, but its tannins are soft enough to avoid the medicine taste that often afflicts other wannabe pinots. It also packs a powerful punch at 14.5%. A great value ($13.99) that will drink well for 3-4 years given its relatively young 2000 vintage.
3.0 of 5 Stars Mixed Review for 2005
By Thumper 12141604, October 20, 2007
In March I wrote "loads of fresh cherries on the nose, a hint of leather and spice on the palate with a lush dark berry lingering finish. A rather firmly structured well crafted medium bodied wine with moderate tannins." NOW in October I find the 2005 far too sweet, way too hot (13.9%) and too expensive. No longer 4 stars,,,three at best. Will not repeat buy.
3.0 of 5 Stars Mixed feelings

From the recommendation I was given, I expected a bit more. I wouldn't warn anyone off this wine, because it was quite good, but I didn't find it particularly exceptional.
3.0 of 5 Stars Too much fruit?
By Merrick11708239, July 30, 2005
I love Pinot's but this one is extremely high on the fruit forward list. At 13.7% alcohol, this Pinot penetrates high in nose with a lingering, almost rose petal, effect. The wine definitely benefits from some serious swirling of air into it. What's missing are some earth notes that seem so characterisitic of the Russian River Valley. Still, this 2003 Pinot is very drinkable and I had most of the bottle in one evening; just get ready for some way-forward fruit.
2.0 of 5 Stars Disappointed
By rce11826355, November 09, 2005
Based upon customer reviews, I bought two 2004's. To my surprise, this wine did not live up to my expectations. I thought it was out of balance, with too little fruit, high alcohol and strong tannins which gave the wine an unpleasant aftertaste. While certainly drinkable, it is not a bargain at this or maybe any price.
