Why We Chose Them
In 2000, Jean Michel Gerin (Cote Rotie), Laurent Combier (Crozes Hermitage), and Peter Fischer (Coteaux D'Aix) founded Trio Infernal, having purchased 50 acres in Priorat, Spain. It only took a few years for the Rhone Valley's top winemakers to turn Spain's hottest wine region on its head. In 2006, El Mundo, Spain's leading newspaper, named Trio Infernal's 2004 Cuvee No. 2/3 the Best Spanish Wine of the Year.
The 2005s just came off the bottling line, and both releases from Trio outshine the marvelous 2004s. After tasting the first four vintages of Trio Infernal and now the stupendous 2005s, we believe that we are witnessing the emergence of one of the world's great wine estates. These winemakers' extensive experience with Rhone varieties has led them to fashion a new style of Priorat wine--neither heavy nor ponderous, but rich, vibrant and aromatic. These are fabulously concentrated, wonderfully complex reds, with spicy aromas and great length, like supercharged Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

The Wines
2005 Trio Infernal Priorat Cuvee No. 1/3: A blend of Grenache and Carignan, aged for 12 months in twice-used barrels. Intense, forward, red berry flavors are balanced by bright acid and supple, ripe tannins. Superb with veal, rabbit, or chicken roasted with rosemary and garlic. Drink on release for the delicious, youthful berried flavors or age for up to 7 years.
2005 Trio Infernal Priorat Cuvee No. 2/3: The greatest wine that's been released by Trio, even upstaging the highly acclaimed 2004. 100% 90-year-old Carignan that sees 18 months of new French oak. Cuvee No. 2/3 has gorgeous wild raspberry flavors and pronounced violet overtones, but don't drink this wine too fast--it will benefit from hours in a large Riedel glass. This is a serious wine that goes perfectly with aged mountain cheeses or roasted game birds. Drink now-2025.

2005 Priorat
Trio Infernal's estate is composed of 50 acres of terraced old-vine Carignan and Grenache parcels that have been hand-carved into the hillsides. Vineyard work here is as arduous as any appellation in the world. In a normal growing season, Priorat's baking-hot climate and rugged, mineral-rich terrain combine to yield small berries packed with ripe fruit.
After a dry winter and hardly any spring, there were two small downpours in August, just enough to relieve stress in the vines. The danger in such vintages is a combination of both extremely high sugars and high acids giving to off-balance wines. Fischer, Combier and Gerin decided to harvest early and quickly, bringing in perfectly ripe and clean fruit. For those producers who harvested early and quickly, the 2005 Priorat wines are as exciting as any wines made in this celebrated appellation.
