Kistler
Kistler
We are fortunate to have received some of the extremely rare Kistler single vineyard wines. They are truly the masters of Pinot and Chardonnay in California. We NEVER see these wines available in quantity, as they are primarily mailing list only or saved for the restaurants. Here is your chance to taste greatness. Below are just a few of the comments that Robert Parker has made about these fabulous wines/winery:
“Given the breadth of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs produced by Steve Kistler, he is the undeniable master of these two varietals in California. In short, his Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are wines of extraordinary intensity, complexity, and richness. Moreover, they should prove to be amazingly age worthy.” RP
“If the Kistler Winery could be magically transported to the middle of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, it would quickly gain a reputation as glorious as any producer of Burgundy grand crus.” RP
“Name me a Burgundy cellar where someone could walk through and taste all the cuvées and find such extraordinary levels of quality. Perhaps Coche-Dury in Meursault, Dominique Lafon in Meursault, Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, Michel Niellon in Chassagne-Montrachet, and from time to time, Domaine Ramonet in Chassagne-Montrachet. The point is that Steve Kistler and his partner, Mark Bixler, are at the top of their game, making world-class Chardonnays of remarkable consistency.” RP
More notes from Parker on these wines below:
Another impressive group of Chardonnays from Steve Kistler, these 2006s are unmistakably Burgundian in their aromatics, textures, and flavor profiles. Kistler has given up on the highly fashionable Dijon clones, relying on old California clones, primarily old Wente selections. He feels the same about Pinot Noir, using the Calera and other older California clones rather than the Dijon selections.

2006 Kistler Mc Crea Vineyard Chardonnay
The 2006 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard exhibits a light gold/green hue along with aromas of stone fruits, honey, orange zest (or is it tangerine?), and subtle wood spices. Full-bodied with beautiful texture as well as purity, and a long finish. 93-94 RP

2006 Kistler Vine Hill Chardonnay
The relatively cool growing season for 2007 Chardonnays produced tightly knit wines with very crisp acid profiles, superb concentration because of modest yields, and relatively long aging potential of probably up to a decade for most of these Chardonnays. If the scores seem slightly more conservative that in previous vintages, this probably reflects the vintage’s personality, which is more backward than the more evolved 2006s or fabulous 2005s, which have always shown brilliantly. 93-96 pts. 2006 Kistler Dutton Ranch Chardonnay
The 2006 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is structured and tannic, with more acidity, and a leaner, more backward personality than the Durell Vineyard, with a chalky character. White currant, hazelnut, and wood spice notes are present in this medium to full-bodied white. 92-94 RP

2007 Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay
Rich, complex aromas of ripe fruits, minerals and nut oil-elegant on the palate, bright lemon flavors combine with tasted almond flavors and pain grille. Richly textured with a long, lingering finish. This wine is a blend of four vineyards- Vine Hill, Durell, Dutton and Kistler and shows the strength of all. It is completely barrel-fermented using indigenous and cultured yeasts, is aged in 50% new French oak barrels unracked and in contact with all its fermentation lees, has undergone a malolactic fermentation, receives minimal handling and processing, and is bottled unfiltered and, generally, unfined after 11-18 months of barrel age.
$79.99 per bottle
