A cool coastal county sandwiched between Monterey and San Mateo, Santa Cruz is home to more than 20 wineries. The region has about 185 acres under vine, over half of which are planted to Santa Cruz Chardonnay. The other notable varieties planted here are Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Most Santa Cruz wine producers regularly purchase grapes from outside the region, often from the Central Coast, to supplement the local supply. But even those Santa Cruz wines made exclusively from county-grown acreage are usually identified as originating in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.
