Mourvedre is a sparsely planted variety, found in the southern Rhone Valley, Provence, and most notably along the Mediterannean Coast in the appellation of Bandol. Occasionally, the grape is also found in very warm microclimates of the New World. Mourvedre seems to like sandy soil, and must be cultivated to low yields. At its best, the variety offers wines of tremendous aromatic complexity and great aging potential. Frequently, Mourvedre is used as a blending component with other Rhone varieties.
