Laurent-Perrier is a giant in Champagne
, which has blazed a trail both in the cellar and on the international market. Founded in 1812 by Alphonse Pierlot, Laurent-Perrier has passed through the hands of only three proprietors—all families—since its inception. Its current owners, the Nonancourts, have been in control since 1925.
It was also the Nonancourts, in 1958, who revolutionized the champagne world by introducing a multi-vintage prestige cuvee. Other notable wines include the rich, red-fruity rosé, made via some skin contact with 100% Pinot Noir
grapes rather than being a white wine to which a quantity of red wine has been added.
In the market, Laurent-Perrier became the first house to establish a wholly owned subsidiary, when it did so in the U.K. in 1978. Three more subsidiaries followed, in Switzerland, the United States, and Belgium, making Laurent-Perrier the largest family owned champagne house in the world.
