At Chateau Leoville Las Cases, Manager Jean Hubert Delon's reputation--or better yet, notoriety--precedes him. A formidable man who governs the vines with an iron fist, Delon has struck fear into the heart of many an unassuming wine critic. His intensity has also driven the wines here to the doorstep of the First Growths, a prime reason why Las Cases is the foremost "Super Second."

Originally part of a much larger estate which included Leoville-Barton and Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Las Cases was separated from its siblings in 1840. For the past five generations, the property has been owned and run by the Delon family. Jean Hubert oversees all operations in the 97 hectare vineyard which is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The eponymous Grand Vin is prized for its power and richness, giving its northerly neighbor, Chateau Latour, a run for its money. In fact, the wine is often quite Pauillac-like in its black fruit and mineral character and firm tannic spine. For near First Growth quality, expect to pay a near First Growth price for this deeply colored and hugely concentrated wine. Oh, and plan on waiting 30 years before you drink it.
