89 Points | International Wine Cellar , November/December 2001
($144) Full color. Full-blown aromas of grilled nuts and toasted bread, with a distinctly yeasty note of flor. Rich, nutty and very smooth, with rather soft mousse. Ripe, thick and full, with an intriguing smoky quality. Finishes with very good length. I find most '89s distinctly oxidized and already tired, but this still-fresh example would make a terrific dinner-table Champagne. (Terry Theise Estate Selections; imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY)

Are You Sure It's NV?

Couer de Cuvee has been one of my favorite champagnes from the 1990's, but please recheck your notes--I've had the 1990, 1991 and 1992 vintages but have have never seen Coeur de Cuvee in NV. If there is a NV release in the USA I'd love to try it. But, check with Terry Theise or the Skurnick's, and I think you'll find it's a vintage wine. I still have a 2 or 3 bottles of the 1991. In my experience, this is a champagne that literally needs to breathe a bunch (at least 20-30") before it opens up and gives you all its got. Still somewhat oaky, but improving each year. A beautifully balanced and blended bubbly. Give it lots 'o air and time, and it'll reward ya plenty.
