About Chateau Ausone

Once owned by the Roman poet and vintner, Ausonius, this St. Emilion First Growth is now managed by Alain Vauthier. Along with the limestone hillside where the old vines reside, Vauthier is largely responsible for Ausone's success. ($285) Medium red with some amber at the rim. Deep, smoky aromas of red fruits, marzipan, truffle, earth and leather. Vinous, minerally and penetrating, with a suggestion of liqueur-like ripeness. Firm, bright and classy, with excellent grip. Finishes fairly tannic but long and sweet. A somewhat exotically styled Ausone that nonetheless displays considerable class. Drink now through 2015.
