92 Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - May/June 2001

Pale gold color, deeper than the "regular" reserve chardonnay. Superripe aromas of apricot, tropical fruits, honey, smoke and bacon fat; distinct waxy suggestion of botrytis. Thick in texture but conveys a strong impression of acidity. A rather powerful, slightly aggressive chardonnay with real thrust. Very long and vibrant on the aftertaste.

Hard to decide whether the Chateau St. Michelle 1999 Cold Creek is better...this wine has a higher alcohol content & approximately $15 more, but I like it's rich taste.

The best Chardonnays in the world continue to arrive from the region where the grape first emerged: the chalk, clay, and limestone vineyards of Burgundy and Chablis. While the origins of the grape were disputed for many years, with some speculating that the grape came all the way from the Middle East, DNA researchers at the University of California-Davis proved in 1999 that Chardonnay actually developed...
